With the 4th of July only two days away, you’ve probably already stocked up on all the sparklers, bottle rockets, and Black Cats you can find. Perhaps you’ve even dusted off your baseball mitt, slip-n-slide, and lawn chair—but have you decorated yet? It’s not officially Independence Day until your home is covered in red, white, and blue! Here are a few of my favorite holiday decorating ideas.
Inside
Start by laying a red or blue tablecloth over your dining room table and topping it with a festive centerpiece. Family Fun shows you how to make one that doubles as a utensil holder, or you can buy a red, white, and blue flower arrangement at your local flower store. Create festive place settings by purchasing 4th-of-July-themed plates. Target sells plastic, star-shaped plates in red, white, and blue. Then, roll a blue napkin and secure it with a cheerful napkin ring. Try creating this one from MarthaStewart.com. To finish off your table, tie thick red, white, or blue ribbon around the back of each chair, or if you’re feeling crafty make this patriotic chair cover. And be sure to check out the patriotic table decorating ideas from Hostess with the Mostess, which are perfect indoors or out.
Decorate the rest of your house with framed photos of family members who served in the military. Hewlett-Packard lets you download and print its photo frames for free.
Outside
Because you’ll likely spend most of the day outside, enhance your deck or patio with red, white, and blue decorations. Hang half-rounds of flag bunting from your porch or windows. Country Home shows you how to create your own. Consider enlivening your planters with a few flags. MarthaStewart.com has a great do-it-yourself flag planter. To bring sparkle to your home when it gets dark, wrap white lights around pillars or drape them through trees and bushes. Finally, don’t forget to hang the flag. For pointers on how to hang it properly, go here.
When it’s all said and done, take pictures and send them my way. I want to see how you decorated!
Until tomorrow,
The Home Know-It-All
