Most homes don’t strictly adhere to a single decorating style. Rather, they combine a little of this style, a bit of that, with whatever colors, patterns, and decorative details are right for them. I haven’t been in my house long enough to have much “style” yet, but I’ve managed to cobble together a mix of traditional and contemporary furnishings, a few midcentury-modern touches (my favorite at the moment!), and, in certain spots, a few unavoidable retro touches leftover from the previous inhabitants.
Even if you aren’t planning on re-creating strict period details, knowing the basic decorating styles can help you craft the look that’s right for your rooms. To get you started on the path to decorating enlightenment, here’s a rundown on one of the easiest and most common styles: traditional.
If you’re looking for timeless style, this is it. Influenced by the style of the 18th and 19th centuries, traditional style links traditional (of course) elements of the past with classic details that transcend generations. Think high ceilings, large windows, lots of architectural detail.
Part of the challenge of defining traditional style, however, is that it has become a catchall for everything from Victorian interiors to casual summer cottages. Nonetheless here are some basics:
Classic traditional style
Very traditional interiors may feature thick white crown molding, ornate window treatments, bold colors and patterns (lots of florals and stripes), and rich fabrics. You might find dark, rich woods and even ornate carvings. It’s opulent, it’s elegant, it’s formal. To truly capture this style, make sure there’s symmetry in your spaces, framed artwork, and—just for good measure—at least one wingback chair!
Modern traditional style
More modern interpretations of traditional style are typically done with a lighter hand. Rooms are open and light, not overdone. You’ll find comfortable, upholstered furnishings in classic shapes. Formal elements might mix with more casual touches, creating spaces that easily move between formal entertaining and laidback evenings at home with the family. Paintings, patterned rugs, and carefully selected collections add personality without cluttering modern traditional spaces.

As I mentioned above, I’ll give you a rundown on other common decorating styles from country to contemporary soon. But in the meantime, Rental Decorating, provides info on all sorts of styles ranging from Amish to Moroccan (and a few more common ones in between).
