There’s not much that my incorrigible dog, Lucky, won’t devour—especially when it comes to french fries, pasta, and just about anything made out of paper. Surprisingly, though, he’s never taken a liking to houseplants.
But with their funky shapes and fresh scents, houseplants can easily pique a pet’s interest—and let’s face it: some pets aren’t too picky about what they put in their mouths. Unfortunately, many houseplants can be harmful to pets’ health, causing a host of health problems from abdominal pain and dizziness to difficulty breathing and even death in severe cases. Wondering if your treasured houseplants are dangerous? Check out this list of toxic houseplants and this list of nontoxic varieties, so you can determine which plants to keep out of Rover’s reach. And this handy list outlines safe plants for birds.
Luckily, not all houseplants are harmful for pets. In fact, cats love to graze on tender grass seedlings such as rye, alfalfa, and wheat, so bring these into your home if you want to give them something safe to nibble on. Learn about other houseplants your feline friends can’t resist. And try these other suggestions for keeping Fluffy away from your plants.
Does Fido always go for the leaves of your dracaena palm instead of his dog chow? Coat the leaves with Bitter Apple, a pet-deterrent spray that’s available for all sorts of pets, from dogs and cats to ferrets and birds.
If your favorite plant is mysteriously missing foliage or has familiar-looking bite marks, or if your pet seems ill, contact your vet right away.
Until tomorrow,
The Home Know-It-All
